Children ages 5 to 12 years old and their families are invited to join us for this free event. Fishing poles, bait and tackle will be provided by the La Crosse Area Fisheries Offices in cooperation with the Friends of the Upper Mississippi. A light lunch will be provided for the children, parents, volunteers and employees.
You can expect to see roughly 250 area youth ages 5-12, and their parents as they rotate among 4 different learning stations. The four learning stations will concentrate on fishing ethics and conservation, fish anatomy, fish behavior and habitats, and jig tying. After an hour of learning they will be set loose on a hatchery pond stocked with 2,500 10-14 inch rainbow trout to test their new found fishing knowledge.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the chance of introducing fish diseases, no outside bait will allowed on the premises.
All children must register before the event by a parent or guardian. A registration station will be available at the Genoa National Fish Hatchery. This event is weather dependent, therefore, If the event is cancelled an announcement will be posted on our facebook page and also on local radio stations WVRQ, 98.3 and Cow 97.1 by 8:00 a.m. the morning of the event.
